Roderick Nash: “The Romantic Wilderness” and “The American Wilderness”

In class and on the syllabus we have asked you to read two chapters from Wilderness & The American Mind.  After reviewing the readings I am going to amend it to just “The American Wilderness” because we’ve already discussed many of the ideas presented in the previous chapter, “The Romantic Wilderness.”

Consider the following questions:

– How did growing American Nationalism reflect changing ideas of wilderness, especially appreciation of it?

– How did literature of the time reflect these changing ideas?

– What artists does Nash discuss?

–  How does Nash describe Cole’s interest in the “tensions” between European landscapes and American ones?
